Cloud 9 Siargao: A Guide to Siargao’s Famous Surf Spot

Cloud 9, General Luna is the surfing capital of the Philippines.

From world-class waves and international surfing competitions to sunrise views and the iconic Cloud 9 boardwalk, here’s everything you need to know before visiting.

Where Is Cloud 9 in Siargao?

Cloud 9 is located on the eastern coastline of Siargao Island, just north of the main centre of General Luna.

It’s close enough to General Luna to visit easily by scooter, tricycle or tuk-tuk, which is one reason General Luna is such a popular place to stay for surfers and travellers wanting to experience Cloud 9.

If you're staying at Kawayan Hostel in General Luna, Cloud 9 is an easy trip from the hostel, making it possible to head there for an early surf, watch the sunrise or visit for a few hours during the day. We can also arrange transport for our guests during their stay.

Why Is It Called Cloud 9?

The name Cloud 9 has become synonymous with Siargao, but its origins are surprisingly simple. The surf break is widely reported to have been named after Cloud 9 chocolate bars, which were brought to the area and enjoyed by visiting surfers. The name stuck, eventually becoming the internationally recognised name for the surf break.

Today, Cloud 9 is known worldwide and has played a major role in establishing Siargao as the surfing capital of the Philippines.

Surfing at Cloud 9

Surf culture is what made Cloud 9 famous. The break is known for its powerful, hollow right-hand reef wave and is best suited to experienced surfers when conditions are strong. You don't need to be an expert surfer to enjoy the area, however.

There are surf schools, instructors and other breaks within and around the Cloud 9 and General Luna area suitable for different experience levels, including people trying surfing for the first time.

If you're a beginner, speak to the Kawayan Hostel team to arrange a session with a local surf instructor rather than heading directly into the main Cloud 9 break.

Kawayan Hostel is 10 minutes from Cloud 9 surf spot, Siargao.

Any visit to Cloud 9 isn’t complete without a visit to Shaka Cafe.

Things to Do at Cloud 9 Besides Surfing

You definitely don't need to surf to visit Cloud 9.

Around the Cloud 9 area you'll also find cafés, restaurants, beach bars and places to relax, so it's easy to combine a visit with breakfast, lunch or an afternoon exploring this part of General Luna.

The area is one of Siargao's most popular places for wave watching, photography, enjoying the coastline and beach and experiencing the island's surf culture.

One of its most recognisable features is the Cloud 9 boardwalk, which extends across the shallow reef towards the surf break. It's a great place to watch experienced surfers and take in views across the Pacific Ocean.

Cloud 9 is also particularly beautiful around sunrise, when the eastern coastline of Siargao gets the first light of the day.

Siargao International Surfing Cup

Cloud 9 hosts the Siargao International Surfing Cup, one of the biggest events on Siargao's annual calendar.

The competition attracts professional surfers and spectators to General Luna and has helped establish Siargao's international reputation as a surfing destination.

The event is generally held at the end of October annually, although the dates can change from year to year. During competition time, Cloud 9 becomes particularly lively, with surfing heats, spectators and events bringing additional energy to General Luna.

If you're planning a Siargao trip specifically around the surfing competition, check the confirmed dates for that year's event before booking your flights and accommodation.

Is Cloud 9 Worth Visiting If You Don't Surf?

Absolutely. Cloud 9 has grown beyond being simply a surf break. It's an important part of Siargao's identity and one of the island's most recognisable places.

Watching surfers from the boardwalk, seeing the reef and coastline, enjoying the beach, experiencing the local hospitality, visiting at sunrise and exploring the surrounding area make it worthwhile even if you've never stepped on a surfboard.

For first-time visitors to Siargao, Cloud 9 should be high on the list of places to see.
